What You Expect To Hear

The pipe organ is often called the king of instruments due to its ability to create a myriad of sounds but many churches are moving towards contemporary music for services. Along with this move away from organ music is a general decline in the number of organists. According to the National Association of Schools of Music, in 1998-99 there were 303 undergraduate majors. In the 2011-12, it was 182. In Columbia, Missouri four organists share why the organ is still important to not only the church, but to their spiritual lives.

Film

For whatever reason I decided to shoot my first roll of film. Ever. It’s entertaining and has a certain thrill even though I have no idea what I’m doing. I used my high school teacher’s old camera and my some expired film leftover in the bag. I also started using my grandmother’s old camera but that roll isn’t quite done yet.

The King of Instruments

Story on Eric Aldrich who plays the organ for Parkade Baptist Church. I have always been amazed by this instrument and I was excited to finally work on a project involving it.

These are the selects for my five points of view project. I plan to combine these with audio and some video portraits for the final piece. IMG_3719 IMG_3767 IMG_3777 IMG_3785 IMG_3854

Breaking the Ice

Well it isn’t the semester until your first photo idea doesn’t work out. Wouldn’t be convenient if everyone just always said yes and let us into their lives. So now I’m back to square one and scrambling for another subject. I was trying to track down another person I had shot in a photo early on in staff and I did not get all the caption info that the photo needed. I’m still going to pursue that but probably not for this. I’m afraid I’m thinking of ideas that are one and done projects and not longer stories. I have to remind myself that every project can be a piece to another project. Also in reading Bird by Bird I got a nice chuckle out of this poem.

by Phillip Lopate
we who are
your closest friends
feel the time
has come to tell you
that every Thursday
we have been meeting
as a group
to devise ways
to keep you
in perpetual uncertainty
frustration
discontent and
torture
by neither loving you
as much as you want
nor cutting you adrift

your analyst is
in on it
plus your boyfriend
and your ex-husband
and we have pledged
to disappoint you
as long as you need us

in announcing our
association
we realize we have
placed in your hands
a possible antidote
against uncertainty
indeed against ourselves
but since our Thursday nights
have brought us
to a community of purpose
rare in itself
with you as
the natural center
we feel hopeful you
will continue to make
unreasonable
demands for affection
if not as a consequence
of your
disastrous personality

then for the good of the collective
